Earth & Marine Science Summer School

This Summer School programme is fully funded by the BG Group Plc and students will experience an exciting range of interactive and curriculum linked activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), with emphasis on earth and marine science. Students will be inspired by leading experts and personalities who are passionate about STEM and exploration. In addition, students will develop investigative and presentation skills, personal effectiveness and self-confidence.

Places will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Students will take part in an interesting range of interactive and curriculum linked activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), with emphasis on earth and marine science. Students will develop investigative and presentation skills around practical experiences in earth and marine science.

There will be the opportunity to interact with STEM Ambassadors, university academics and undergraduate students, and also to enjoy peer-to-peer social activities with university undergraduates.

Day 1: arrival at the University of Southampton, welcome and introduction to the summer school, ice breaker activities, personal effectiveness and settling into residence

Day 2, 3 and 4: at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) at the University of Southampton, including lab-based and onshore and off-shore based investigative activities

Day 5: Plenary presentation day.

Applicants will indicate their preference in attending a course which focusses on either marine science or earth science; both courses will offer a mixture of lab based investigation, theory, analysis and modelling, practical field work, and final day team presentations.
